Family members and friends of the 100 cherished people who died as a direct result of the Station Fire founded the Station Fire Memorial Foundation in June 2003. Our purpose is to ensure that our loved ones would receive a proper and timely memorial upon the sacred ground where their lives were so tragically cut short. It is our intent that the Foundation will procure the land known as the Station Site and not only build but maintain the Memorial site and as such, fundraising is expected to be long-term.   The Foundation encourages maximum participation by affected Family members and Survivors of the tragedy.

On February 17, 2008, the Station Fire Memorial Foundation unveiled the design that was chosen as a result of the Station Fire Memorial Design Search. Contributors were asked to create a design including the following four critical elements;

  • It will be a celebration of the lives of the 100 lost directly as a result of the fire. It will personalize them and allow each a separate area for family offerings.

  • It will contain a type of interactive kiosk, which holds survivor stories, possibly including videotaped interviews.

  • It will commemorate the 1st responders efforts

  • It will contain pertinent parts of the temporary memorials left at the site since the fire, including the heart made by Paul Bertolo for the 1st Anniversary.

The chosen design best represented these elements, as well as accommodated for added recommendations from victims’ families. To be known as the Station Fire Memorial Park, its key features will include 100 individual memorial gardens, an Aeolian Harp bridge, a ripple pool and stream, and a meeting house which will house the survivor aspect of the memorial and a history of the memorial site.
